Atlanta
General Information |
|
With a dramatic increase in population over the past decade from 2.9 million to
4.1 million, Atlanta has become quite the metropolis that it was meant to be.
The ever-changing skyline of downtown represents Atlanta's fervor for growth,
not only in its size, but in its attributes as well. As hosts of the 1996
Olympics, Atlanta received world-wide recognition as one of the greater cities
in the world. The Georgia Dome, which was built to sit 70,500, is home to the
Atlanta Falcons and had the honor of hosting Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. Turner
Field, home of the Atlanta Braves and Philips Arena, home to the Atlanta Hawks
and Thrashers are two other stadiums that contribute to the enormity of the
city.

Georgia is known as the "Peach State", which is
probably why so many streets and restaurants in Atlanta are named with some
variation of "peach", as in Peachtree Street. Although peaches are grown in
Georgia, Atlanta is known more for being the transportation center of the
South.
Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport is one of the nation's
busiest airports and is the southern hub for most airlines. Several major
interstate highways converge in Atlanta. The city is also the world
headquarters for many Fortune 500 companies and more than 1,000
international companies do business in Atlanta.
Atlanta is also known for its flourishing arts scene with a well-regarded
symphony, several major art and science museums, opera, jazz, theater, and
an outstanding ballet company. The Fox Museum, High Museum of Art, and the
Woodruff Arts Center are some examples of cultural centers which lie in the
heart of Atlanta.
Visitors are delighted to find that the people of Atlanta are charming and
mannerly, as one might suspect in a southern city, yet cosmopolitan and
sophisticated. |
Southern hospitality is what people call it and yes, it does
exist. More than 50% are transplants from other states and countries that find
themselves blending into the culture of the South.
Atlanta offers a mélange of culture, a dazzling array of beautiful
neighborhoods, a world class business center and welcomes all to the heart of
the South, whether you're here to visit or live.
